Seek & thou shalt find -
the Navigation is not an obvious pub to find, but it is well worth the visit. It
is located in the village of Calder Grove on the A636 Wakefield to Denby Dale
Road (there is a sign on the main road, next to the TOTAL petrol station). Approached
by a 'whale back' single track bridge (worth the visit in its own right), the
Navigation is situated right on the Calder-Hebble Navigation, and gets some of
its trade from boats that moor up outside. The walk on the canal bank, in either
direction is recommended with two locks within a few hundred yards of the pub. There
are very good facilities for children (no charge) both outside and inside (soft
play & machines). Food is served at lunchtime throughout the year, and at
tea-time during the summer only. There is a quiz at 9:30 on Wednesday nights
with a gallon of beer for the winner.
Outside gas
heaters have recently been introduced so that you can stay outside next to the
canal even longer at night!
